Day 4......The Roof is Done

Friday....and the roof is done.  The first goal has been completed and all supplies were completely used up.  Four extra men were hired for today which helped tremendously.  The men on our team worked hard for the first two days we were here and were feeling muscles they didn't know they had!  Most woke up stiff and achey so the shoveling was left for the new guys with fresh energy while our guys helped with wheeling, poking out air pockets and filling buckets of water for the ladies.  The ladies finished off the re-bar on the roof and continued keeping the blue barrels full of water for the concrete mixers.

After another amazing lunch, we took the van and headed over to Creacion de Fe - the very first school under COCREF that was started almost 30 years ago when a pastor's wife began teaching children in the Batey how to read, write and do math.  Last time we were here it was one level - now it is three levels of classrooms, added by many willing hands over the last few years.  A brand new Christian Reformed Church is being built across the street.  Two powerful lights in this community.

During our breaks we enjoyed pineapple, coffee, crackers and peanut butter for snacks.  We joked around with the kids and joined in their skipping and volleyball.  Kids are the same wherever you go and a gracious 'gracias' and a big smile go a long, long way to communicating love to them.

Tomorrow we will be spending time at the beach.  Michele, Gord and Nicole did a lot of travelling to a few school in the country part of the Dominican.  Michele attended meeting with teachers and administration while Nicole and Gord filmed and took pictures.  They arrived back at the ministry late and tired but satsified.

Please pray that we will find the weekend restful and that our bodies will be refreshed for Monday.

  1. It's so exciting to see the progress that was made this week. Our family was part of the Wyoming HANDS Team that worked at La Esperanza the week before you. It's hard work, but such a labour of love. Enjoy your time off this weekend! And remember, it's very, very cold here in Ontario. When you return you will miss the warmth of the Dominican climate, but even more you'll miss the warmth of the people. Please send our love to everyone there.

  2. Thanks for all your encouraging words! Our week was full and though the work was hard we are surrounded by people who love us dearly. We are truly experiencing the communion of the saints. We will pass on your 'hellos' to Ezequele, Billy and Emilio - they are with us each day!
